How browser based PDF processing works

The short answer

A local browser tool reads the file on your device, changes it in the open browser tab, and prepares a new file for download. The server supplies the website, but it does not need to receive the selected document.

What happens during a ToolPDFs task

1. You choose a file from your device.
2. The browser gives the open page access to that selected file.
3. The tool reads the document inside the browser tab.
4. The tool creates the requested PDF, image, spreadsheet, or document.
5. Your browser saves the new file to your device.

Local does not mean unlimited

Large documents still use your device memory and processor. A phone can struggle with an image heavy PDF that a desktop handles comfortably. Some conversions simplify complex Office layouts, and ToolPDFs does not currently recognize text in image only scans.

How to assess a processing claim

Read the privacy policy and the limitations on the specific tool page. Test important workflows with a nonsensitive sample before using confidential material. A useful privacy statement should say whether document contents are sent to the provider, not rely on a broad word such as secure.
